The Study: RTI International is a not-for-profit research organization conducting a study for 12 months. Participants will be asked to complete 13 surveys and six virtual interviews, where they will answer questions about why and how they joined nationalist groups. Individuals will also be asked about the process of leaving these groups.

Purpose: The goal of this confidential research study is to understand individuals' decisions to leave groups associated with nationalist movements. We collect data from individuals leaving nationalist groups to understand their motivations, experiences, and reasons for leaving. This data will help develop strategies to prevent radicalization and help others leave extremist groups and ideologies. At RTI, we value the privacy and confidentiality of our research participants. Our approach encourages participants to share their experiences freely while ensuring their safety.

The Research Team: The interviewers for this project have more than 50 years of combined experience working with individuals in nationalist groups across North America and Europe. They value learning directly from individuals with these life experiences. The interviewers are nonjudgemental and give participants the opportunity to tell their stories in their own words. The interviewers are sensitive to different types of trauma that some individuals have experienced. Participants in their studies have shared that the interviewers are caring and respectful.

Compensation: Participants will be paid for their time. The amount for each survey and interview will increase throughout the study.
